Behind the Scenes with Local 706
The BET Awards is one of the most anticipated events in entertainment, where music, culture, and creativity intersect. This year, Local 706 artists, including Tai Young, Lauren Guzman, Geno Freeman, Alyssa Hudson, Schuron Womack, Rebekah Aladdin, Jennifer Garcia, and Geneva Nash-Morgan, were instrumental in crafting the stunning looks seen on stage and the red carpet. Their work not only enhanced the glamour of the event but also celebrated the artistry of makeup and hairstyling in a way that resonated with audiences worldwide.
April M. Chaney, a leading name in the beauty industry, brought her expertise to the event, ensuring that each look reflected the vibrancy and excellence the BET Awards represent. Her leadership and creative vision helped create breathtaking styles that honored both the legacy and future of Black beauty and culture.
The Return of the Craft Fair: A Creative Hub for Artists
Beyond award shows, Local 706 members continue to innovate and support one another through initiatives like the Hair Stylists and Makeup Artists Craft Co-Op. Spearheaded by industry professionals Maria Sandoval and Amy Sparks, this initiative emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way for artists to sustain themselves and showcase their creativity outside of traditional production work.
From its humble beginnings in a church parking lot with just 15 vendors, the Craft Fair has grown into a staple event, now hosted at Local 80. The latest fair in July 2023 featured over 35 vendors and introduced food trucks, creating a vibrant space for artists to share their crafts with the community. As the industry navigates challenges like the recent WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, these initiatives provide much-needed support, networking opportunities, and financial relief for beauty professionals.
The Power of Community in Beauty
The work of Local 706 extends far beyond makeup brushes and styling tools—it’s about community, resilience, and the passion that fuels creativity. Whether working behind the scenes at prestigious events like the BET Awards or fostering a supportive space for artists through the Craft Fair, Local 706 continues to set the standard in the beauty industry.
As we celebrate these talented artists, we recognize the impact they have in shaping trends, setting new industry benchmarks, and bringing beauty to life in every form. Stay tuned for more from Local 706 as they continue to inspire, create, and redefine the future of beauty.
